Homes Near Nellis & Creech AFB: Where Military Families Live in Las Vegas
Got orders to Nellis or Creech Air Force Base? I'm Eric "Nuke" Hudson, a retired Air Force veteran and Keller Williams agent in Las Vegas. I've lived the PCS life, and I flew Reapers out of Creech, so I know both bases and both commutes. I help military families find homes that fit their commute, schools and budget, not just the prettiest listing photos.

Where Nellis AFB Is and Why Location Matters
Nellis sits on the northeast side of the Las Vegas Valley, just off I-15 next to North Las Vegas. The area right outside the gates is older and more industrial, so many families choose to live 15 to 30 minutes away in newer communities. Picking the right neighborhood affects your commute, your kids' schools and your resale or rental options at your next PCS.
Popular Neighborhoods for Nellis Families
Aliante (North Las Vegas)
Usually my first recommendation for a short commute. Aliante is a master-planned community with mature landscaping, walking trails and Nature Discovery Park, and the drive to the Nellis main gate is generally around 15 to 20 minutes via the 215 Beltway. Aliante area guide | Aliante homes and schools
North Las Vegas
One of the fastest-growing cities in Southern Nevada, with established neighborhoods and newer communities like Valley Vista and Craig Ranch, and builders such as Lennar, D.R. Horton, Richmond American and KB Home. North Las Vegas area guide | North Las Vegas homes and schools
Centennial Hills
More space and a more suburban feel, with a Nellis commute that usually runs about 25 to 35 minutes depending on traffic. Close to Centennial Hills Park and Mount Charleston, and a favorite for Creech families too. Centennial Hills area guide | Centennial Hills homes and schools
Summerlin
Polished master-planned neighborhoods, trails and quick access to Red Rock Canyon. It can work well, but the drive to Nellis can take around 45 minutes and some communities carry layered HOA fees, so run the numbers first. Summerlin West | Summerlin South
Henderson
On the opposite side of the valley, with commutes to Nellis usually in the 30 to 45 minute range. Families choose it when schools and a quieter suburb matter more than drive time. Henderson area guide | Green Valley Ranch
Stationed at Creech AFB? Live on the Northwest Side
A big share of the military families I work with are headed to Creech, not Nellis, and the right answer for them looks very different. Creech is in Indian Springs on US-95, about 45 miles northwest of Las Vegas, or roughly 30 miles past the northwest edge of the valley. I flew Reapers out of Creech, so I've driven that stretch of US-95 more times than I can count.
Why Most Creech Families Live in Northwest Las Vegas
Creech has no on-base family housing or dorms, and Indian Springs is a very small town with very limited housing and few services. So most Creech members live in northwest Las Vegas and drive up US-95. Living on the northwest side cuts out most of the city driving, and from there the commute usually runs roughly 35 to 50 minutes each way, depending on exactly where you live and traffic. Living near Nellis or in Henderson and commuting to Creech means crossing the whole valley first, so I rarely recommend it.
Northwest Neighborhoods Creech Families Like
- Centennial Hills: established neighborhoods, parks and shopping right off US-95. Area guide | Homes and schools
- Skye Canyon: newer master-planned community near the far northwest edge of the valley, closest to the US-95 run north. Area guide | Homes and schools
- Tule Springs: northwest neighborhoods near Floyd Lamb Park and quick US-95 access. Area guide
- Lone Mountain: larger lots and a quieter feel a little farther south. Area guide
- Northwest edges of Summerlin: more amenities and trails, with a somewhat longer drive to the highway. Summerlin West
Shuttle and Vanpool Options
You don't always have to drive yourself. A Nellis-to-Creech shuttle serves eligible Nellis dorm and base-housing residents, and many Creech squadrons run FedVan vanpools from Las Vegas park-and-ride lots. Eligibility and pickup spots change, so ask your sponsor or unit for the current details before you pick a neighborhood around them.
Can Creech Members Live at Nellis?
Yes. Creech orders make you eligible to apply for privatized family housing at Nellis, and the Nellis housing office supports Creech families. Just remember Nellis is on the opposite side of the valley, so the daily drive to Creech is longer than from the northwest side.

On-Base vs. Off-Base Housing
On-base housing at Nellis is managed by Hunt Military Communities, and zero commute has real value. Many families still choose off base for neighborhood choice, school options and the chance to build equity. Creech has no on-base family housing. There are no DoDEA schools on Nellis, so military kids attend Clark County School District schools or local charter schools. Check zoned schools before you commit to a neighborhood.

Where is Nellis Air Force Base?
Nellis AFB sits on the northeast side of the Las Vegas Valley, just off I-15, next to North Las Vegas.
What is the best neighborhood for a short commute to Nellis?
Aliante in North Las Vegas is usually the strongest answer. It is a master-planned community with parks and newer homes, and the drive to the Nellis main gate is generally around 15 to 20 minutes using the 215 Beltway.
Is it a good idea to live right outside the Nellis gates?
The area immediately outside the gates is older and more industrial, so many military families choose to live 15 to 30 minutes away in newer communities with more amenities.
Are there DoDEA schools on Nellis AFB?
No. Military children in Las Vegas attend Clark County School District schools or local charter schools, so it pays to check zoned schools before you choose a neighborhood.
